Even though it’s rare, it’s serious and understanding how it works helps people stay safe with a sense of peace. In this post, we’ll explore Hantavirus using insights from Maria E. Ramos Nino and her team’s article, Hantavirus Emergence in a Changing World.
First, we’ll discuss why we’re talking about Hantavirus. The article by Ramos Nino says, “Environmental change, climate variability, urbanization, and land use transformation are increasingly recognized as critical drivers of Hantavirus emergence and transmission.” This means the virus responds to what’s happening in the environment, and that makes it a public health topic worth noting. Even though Hantavirus infections are rare in many places, they can be severe. Understanding how the virus works helps people stay safe without being scared.
So what exactly is Hantavirus? Hantaviruses are a group of viruses carried mostly by rodents. They belong to the family Hantaviridae, and they cause 2 major illnesses. These are Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS), and Hantavirus Cardiopulmonary Syndrome (HCPS). The article explains that hantaviruses are “rodent borne pathogens that pose increasing global public health concerns due to their association with HFRS and HCPS.” Different rodent species carry different Hantaviruses, and each virus tends to stick with one main host. For example there is the host which is deer mice in North America which has a relationship with the Sin Nombre Virus. This host virus relationship is why Hantavirus risk varies so much by different regions.
The virus spreads through rodent urine, droppings or saliva. It has a higher percentage of spreading when these dry out and become tiny particles in the air. Ramos Nino writes, “Human infection most commonly occurs through inhalation of aerosolized viral particles from contaminated rodent excreta.” This means people can be exposed when cleaning sheds, or garages, sweeping areas where rodents have been or camping or hiking in rodent dense environments.
Hantavirus can have severe symptoms but often people start with symptoms that look a lot like the flu. Then the disease may diverge. If it’s HFRS, it affects the kidneys but if it’s HCPS, it can affect the lungs.
Even though Hantavirus isn’t common in the U.S., it matters for a couple of reasons. For one, climate change affects rodent populations. The article highlights that climate events can increase rodent numbers, which raises the chance of human exposure, even in the U.S.
So how can teens and families stay safe from the Hantavirus? It comes down to safe cleaning, which means not sweeping or vacuuming rodent droppings. Secondly, using disinfectant and wet cleaning methods is helpful. Thirdly, rodent proofing often used areas in your home is beneficial. Finally, it is important to be cautious when outside and wash your hands with soap when going inside.
